Swami Ramananda was in New Delhi
waiting for Gandhi to lead the evening prayers.
As he watched Gandhi walk through the crowd, a
young man blinded by hatred placed himself in
Gandhi's path and fired point blank into his heart.
Such is the greatness of this little man's love
that as his body fell, nothing but the mantra
which was deep within his being came from his
lips, "Hee Ram ...Rama..". This is a
salutation to God, and a blessing that means I
forgive you, I love you, I bless you.
These five words were inscribed over the doorway in Gandhi's room. They exemplify the purpose of Gandhi's actions, which were intimately witnessed by Swami Ramananda the Founder of the Sadhana Society. In Gandhi's autobiography entitled, "My Experiments with Truth," he says, create an intimate relationship with the Absolute and manifest it in every action of your life. This golden key to non-violent resistance, Gandhi called Satayagraha. Swami Ramananda states that the greatest lesson he learned from Gandhi was not to be a follower but to trust your direct experience. This practice is interwoven in The Teachings of the Sadhana Society.
As told by Swami Ramananda.
