"Don't let self-importance get in the way"

Before leaving for India, my family was concerned I wouldn't return - so strong was my desire to work with Mother Teresa. With nervous anticipation from the hotel room in Calcutta I dialed the Sisters of Charity. The phone rang and a soft voice answered, I introduced myself and asked if The Sadhana Teachers could come to the mission and possibly meet Mother Teresa... "I am here right now. Come!" Stunned, we jumped in a taxi and sped toward the mission. We were directed to wait for Mother Teresa in an open- air hallway. Suddenly we were transfixed as this vision approached us -- a tiny, wrinkled woman with eyes that sparkled like a 16 year old. She had a gentle strength and determination that was unshakable. "We are here to help you!" Without hesitation she replied, "Help where you live and that will make all the difference in the world." Reflecting, we asked, "What words of advice would you give to those who wish to help others? Her reply was strong and direct; overflowing with gentle love, tell them "Don't let self importance get in the way!"

I share her words with you, knowing they will impact each of you in a unique way. May her words inspire in all of us the commitment and dedication needed to manifest the unique gifts we have to give to humanity. Gifts from the heart.

Mother Teresa's singularity of purpose and dedication to helping humanity has spanned 65 years. Her incredible selflessness and unwavering spirit are complimented by her humbleness. Her radiant light shows us the way to being a living saint, or a Bodhisattva in today's world.
